Wood turned & handcrafted to a beautiful smooth finish. This gorgeous bowl is made from ancient Swamp Kauri by Master Carver, Rupert Newbold.

The Ancient Kauri wood is from a magnificent stump discovered many years ago on a building site in Papakura, Auckland. The Contractors contacted Rupert who left Northland immediately and drove in his pick up for hours to salvage the wood. The girth of the stump was more than 4 metres wide and barely fit into the tray on his pick up. But with absolute determination and some very careful driving he got it home.

The beautiful gold tones come from the resin in the wood - kauri gum.

Rupert has left the edges of this unique piece in the shapes dictated by the grain on the wood. It is a very beautiful and unique bowl.

Approximate measurements: 33 x 14 cm

To maintain your beautiful piece of Kauri , simply oil it with olive or coconut oil as required.

Handcrafted & Made in New Zealand.

ABOUT OUR ANCIENT WOOD - KAURI

The kauri tree, Agathis australis, is New Zealand’s largest and most famous native tree. Kauri are among the world's mightiest trees, growing to over 50 m tall, with trunk girths up to 16 m, and living for over 2,000 years. Maori used kauri timber for boat building, carving and building houses.

Submerged by a natural disaster for up to 45,000 years in the peat bogs of New Zealand, Swamp Kauri is one of the world’s most valuable and exquisite timbers. Swamp Kauri is known to be the oldest workable wood in the world.
