It was only in September 2019 when designer and illustrator Chris Roch left San Francisco and landed in Auckland with his kiwi husband ready to settle here and call NZ home. Calling to them was the drama of the NZ’s magnificent landscapes and diversity and uniqueness of flora and fauna. New Zealand has a stunning diversity of two very different islands, the beauty, the remoteness, and a lifestyle we share.
Hailing from the small fishing village of Angle in Wales, Chris has had an incredible creative career. He has a degree from the Camberwell College of Art and a Masters in Printed Textiles from the Royal College of Art, London.
He has travelled the world creating artwork and installations for many international brands and fashion designers.
The Painted Garden series of new works is inspired by Chris’s West Auckland garden.  A magical garden with mature Nikau, Punga, Kauri trees and layers upon layers of foliage. The NZ light and changeable Tamaka Mākaurau weather has drawn Chris into the garden time and time again, inspiring him to create this series of new works.
The paintings are full of expression, movement, light in all its moods and a whimsy. They capture the many emotions and moments of the garden.
