The Manaia is a powerful mythological figure in Māori culture. With the head of a bird, the body of a human, and the tail of a fish, the Manaia is a revered spiritual guardian that represents the connection between the physical and spiritual worlds, acting as a messenger and a protector and a symbol of balance and harmony.
Beautifully hand carved in Hokitika, South Island, New Zealand by Donna Summers. As a child Donna was taught that pounamu is a precious taonga, a sacred gift that is passed down through the generations. While working with creating the traditional motifs she takes inspiration from the location where she grew up, whether it was spending hours at the beach fossicking or out in the far north wilderness.
Her work continues to evolve. Donna's intuitive carving reflects her skilled eye for beautiful design. Her pieces speak for themselves.
